What to eat in and around Livorno

A journey through seafood, street food and the traditional flavours of Livorno.

Discover the Tuscan Coast through its most authentic flavours. Start with the local catch, such as Atlantic bonito, before trying two Livorno classics: codfish in tomato sauce and cacciucco, a rich soup made with fish, shellfish and crustaceans, served with garlic-rubbed toasted bread. For a quick bite, choose cecina, a chickpea-flour speciality that is crisp outside and soft inside, also served in the traditional “5 e 5” sandwich. Finish with Schiaccia Briaca from Elba, a sweet treat enriched with dried fruit and Alchermes liqueur, followed by a Ponce alla Livornese, the local hot drink made with coffee and rum.
