Volterra



Volterra is an ancient city in the province of Pisa. The hill on which it rises has seen the first men already in the Iron Age, as confirmed by the Villanovan necropolis. It was one of the city-states of ancient Tuscany, the Etruria. It preserves a historic center of Etruscan origin dating back to over 2800 years ago. The Porta Diana, most of the city walls, the Acropolis, several hypogeas, the Porta all'Arco and various medieval buildings, such as the Palazzo dei Priori, the Medici Fortress and the Cathedral. Volterra offers a large number of places to visit, full of history and culture. Among these is certainly the Etruscan Museum, which houses an archaeological find, considered among the most relevant in the world. It is a sculpture, L'Ombra della sera. To give it the name was D'Annunzio, who saw in its elongated shape the effect of shadows at sunset Ideal destination for a day trip.
